How Many Times Can a Hiker Use the Same Map?
DuPont™ Tyvek® Makes Maps Last

WILMINGTON, Del., April 12, 2001 - That's the question that the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) was trying to solve for its members, many of whom return to their favorite trails year after year.

The AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment and wise use of the Northeast's mountains, rivers and trails. The organization prides itself on providing accurate maps and guidebooks to its 91,000 members for frequently hiked areas such as the White Mountains in New Hampshire (with more than 500 trails) and the Acadia National Park in Maine.

"We want people to explore and enjoy the outdoors," said Beth Krusi, AMC Books Editor-in-Chief/Publisher, Appalachian Mountain Club. "Our members and others who use our guidebooks and maps said they wanted an alternative to paper maps. They wanted tougher maps that were self-protecting and could last through repeated use. We began investigating some options."

Tyvek® brand protective material is selected for synthetic substrate applications because it is tough yet soft, lightweight and highly printable. It resists water, most chemicals, extreme temperatures and rough handling but can be stitched, perforated, die cut and coated.

"We knew we had the accurate part of mapmaking down pat," said Krusi. "Our maps provide hikers with information on trail locations and distances that can be key to the enjoyment of the hike; and on possible safety hazards that can be critical to a hiker's well-being. But when our hikers began to voice their preferences for an alternative to paper maps that would provide protection, we turned to Tyvek® for a solution."

The detailed information provided on maps, such as topography, elevation, trails and water locations, needs to be both colorful and accurate. Tyvek® is compatible with high-quality graphic applications, providing the print quality necessary for complex designs, color gradations and high edge definition. In applications such as mapmaking, where it is important to protect critical information, Tyvek® provides a durable—and printable—solution.

The Appalachian Mountain Club was founded in 1876 and is America's oldest conservation and recreation organization. The nonprofit organization is committed to the protection, enjoyment and wise use of the mountains, rivers and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, and supports conservation efforts and outdoor enjoyment by teaching outdoor skills, running backcountry lodges, building and maintaining trails, publishing guides, helping with land stewardship and assisting with myriad conservation efforts.
